CCC Welcomes The Reverend Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown

Posted by

We are delighted to announce the appointment of The Reverend Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown as a new Canon of Christ Church Cathedral. Shannon comes to us from the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, where she most recently served as Rector of St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Detroit from 2006-2013. In the past year, she completed her doctoral studies at Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, where she was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in June.

Shannon brings with her an extensive portfolio of experience in and passion for the ministry of the church in the heart of the city. In Detroit, she led her congregation to start a community development organization, she worked with an interfaith group to open a client-choice food pantry that was a collaboration between several churches and nonprofit organizations, and she challenged her parish to become a vital presence in the transformation of the neighborhood around them. She also started small conversation groups as a way to grow Christians in community and connectivity. Both of these areas were vitally important in our search, given our Vestry's new vision of greater outreach to and connectivity with our downtown community. In Shannon, we found the right intersection of gifts and call.

Shannon also brings with her gifts of creativity. Prior to seminary, she made her living as a freelance artist and jewelry designer. She specialized in one-of-a-kind clay jewelry and decorative tiles, and also instructed art students in pottery design. Shannon is married to Phillip MacVean, and their daughter Anneliese will be a sixth grader.

We look forward to welcoming her on Sunday, August 17! Stay tuned for opportunities to get to know Shannon!
