The Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown's Installation

Posted by

This past Sunday at our 10 a.m. Eucharist, we installed The Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown as a Canon of Christ Church Cathedaral. A canon (from the Latin canonicus, "relating to a rule", "regular") is the one who keeps the rule, or the rhythm of prayer, in a Cathedral church or on a Bishop's staff. Our Cathedral Canons keep our rule of prayer each weekday at Morning and Evening Prayer, 8:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. The commitment Shannon made this weekend is to keep, with her colleagues, and with the CCC members, this rhythm of life that grounds us and centers us for all the service and ministry we offer in the community.

Shannon comes to us from the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, where she most recently served as Rector of St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Detroit from 2006-2013. In the past year, she completed her doctoral studies at Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, where she was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in June.

Shannon brings with her an extensive portfolio of experience in and passion for the ministry of the church in the heart of the city. In Detroit, she led her congregation to start a community development organization, she worked with an interfaith group to open a client-choice food pantry that was a collaboration between several churches and nonprofit organizations, and she challenged her parish to become a vital presence in the transformation of the neighborhood around them. She also started small conversation groups as a way to grow Christians in community and connectivity. Both of these areas were vitally important in our search, given our Vestry's new vision of greater outreach to and connectivity with our downtown community. In Shannon, we found the right intersection of gifts and call.

Shannon also brings with her gifts of creativity. Prior to seminary, she made her living as a freelance artist and jewelry designer. She specialized in one-of-a-kind clay jewelry and decorative tiles, and also instructed art students in pottery design. Shannon is married to Phillip MacVean, and their sixth grade daughter Anneliese.
